<br />
EFFECTS OF SODA ON YOUR TEETH!<br />
<br />
<br />
Ever seen those videos where someone puts a baby tooth in a glass of soda and watches it
decay?
Well, the effect of soda in an actual mouth is a bit different.
You have your saliva to help wash away the sugar, you eat other things throughout the day, and
brush at least twice a day to remove debris or plaque.
Nevertheless, soda is not something we recommend you consume more often than a once-in-awhile
treat. Here’s why:
Sugar
Soda has an extremely high sugar content. The bacteria that cause tooth decay feed off of sugar
and excrete acid, which is what causes tooth decay.
The more sugar our teeth have to interact with, the more prone to decay they will be.
Acid
Think diet soda is a better alternative? Even though it contains zero sugar, it can still contain
acids such as phosphoric acid or citric acid.
Acid eats away at a tooth’s enamel and leaves it prone to decay.
Colors
Caramel color, Yellow 5, etc. Any type of artificial coloring can cause tooth-staining.
If you prefer your teeth sparkling white, it’s best to stay away from soda.<br />
Instead of soda, we recommend spicing up your daily beverages with other alternatives. How
about some sparkling water or plain water infused with fresh fruit?
When you do drink soda, make sure to rinse with water afterwards. And, as always, keep up
with regular brushing and flossing to protect those precious teeth!<br />

<b>5 Beliefs that may eventually lead to White Spot Lesions - (CariFree Article) </b></div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
White spot lesions are no joke. They are spots on your enamel that lack the minerals that build strong enamel and, thus, are weaker than the surrounding tooth surface. White spots can lead to full cavities, in addition to being cosmetically undesirable. However, they are not inevitable. There are some mistaken beliefs that may lead to white spots that were completely avoidable. Read on to see if you have accidentally adopted any of these dangerous (for your enamel health) beliefs.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<h5 style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #5b84ca; font-family: lexia, Rockwell, Georgia, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 1.2px; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1.1111rem 0px 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Belief 1: Brushing once a day is fine, it’ll do the job.</h5>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Brushing your teeth first thing in the morning is great. It’s a healthy way to kick off your day. Brushing before you eat anything is even better; it lets you get rid of any bacteria that started growing on your teeth overnight instead of spreading and swallowing those bacteria.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
However, thinking that a single daily appointment with your toothbrush is all the care your mouth needs is a recipe for trouble. You expose your mouth to enamel compromising foods and drinks throughout the day. You don’t want to wait twenty-four hours before dislodging the food particles and the bacteria that flourish on those food particles from your mouth. Brush every morning and before bedtime (at least) to keep those enamel weakening forces in check.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<h5 style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #5b84ca; font-family: lexia, Rockwell, Georgia, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 1.2px; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1.1111rem 0px 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Belief 2: Immediately after eating, you should brush vigorously.</h5>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It’s understandable to want to completely clean your teeth after each meal, but white spots can grow from overbrushing, too. As you eat, the environment in your mouth becomes more acidic. The acid dissolves some of the minerals that make up tooth enamel. Normally, as the pH levels in your mouth rise after eating, partially with the help of saliva, the minerals, assisted by fluoride, redeposit on your teeth and rejoin the enamel.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
If you vigorously brush your teeth while your mouth is still acidic after eating, you risk brushing away the dissolved minerals, stripping your enamel away. The resulting weakened white spot lesions are precisely what you were seeking to avoid by brushing. Instead, chew <a href="https://carifree.com/product/ctx2-xylitol-gum/" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%); background-position: center calc(100% - 3px); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-size: 100% 1px; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; margin: 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px 1px 3px; text-decoration-line: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out; vertical-align: baseline;">xylitol gum</a> or swish plain water in your mouth directly after eating, and save the gentle tooth brushing for at least an hour after food or drinks.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<h5 style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #5b84ca; font-family: lexia, Rockwell, Georgia, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 1.2px; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1.1111rem 0px 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Belief 3: Healthy foods won’t hurt my teeth, only junk food.</h5>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It’s well understood that sugar is a major contributor to tooth decay. It’s important to eat a healthy diet; the vitamins and minerals from a healthy diet contribute to overall better health and better oral health. But, that does not mean that eating a healthy diet is not without downsides for enamel health if no additional precautions are taken.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The problem is healthy foods still cause an acidic environment in the mouth after eating. In fact, fruits, which can be very healthy, also can be very acidic. Long term acid environments in the mouth can equal enamel compromise and white spot lesions. <a href="https://carifree.com/product/ctx3-rinse/" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%); background-position: center calc(100% - 3px); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-size: 100% 1px; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; margin: 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px 1px 3px; text-decoration-line: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out; vertical-align: baseline;">Raising oral pH</a> after eating, even after eating healthy foods, is important to the health of your teeth.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<br /></div>
<h5 style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #5b84ca; font-family: lexia, Rockwell, Georgia, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 1.2px; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1.1111rem 0px 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Belief 4: Fluoride is always dangerous. I should always stick to fluoride free products.</h5>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
People can have some strongly held beliefs about fluoride in toothpaste. Sometimes, those beliefs are not supported by good, current research. It seems, based on the best research, that fluoride is a good thing in moderation, not too much and not too little.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Current research indicates that fluoride in toothpaste helps the minerals that dissolve out of the teeth after eating reattach to the enamel as the pH rises again. Fluoride is an important tool to keep white, demineralized spots from developing on teeth. Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste or <a href="https://carifree.com/product/ctx4-gel-1100/" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%); background-position: center calc(100% - 3px); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-size: 100% 1px; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; margin: 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px 1px 3px; text-decoration-line: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out; vertical-align: baseline;">tooth gel</a> is recommended for most adults and children who can do so properly.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It is well known that too much fluoride can cause brown, discolored spots on the teeth if the teeth are exposed to too much fluoride before they finish developing. It’s a condition called fluorosis. That’s why it’s important to supervise small children while they brush their teeth. A <a href="https://carifree.com/product/ctx3-gel/" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%); background-position: center calc(100% - 3px); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-size: 100% 1px; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; margin: 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px 1px 3px; text-decoration-line: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out; vertical-align: baseline;">fluoride free tooth gel</a> may be appropriate for young children who swallow toothpaste; check with your dentist if you have questions.</div>
<h5 style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #5b84ca; font-family: lexia, Rockwell, Georgia, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 1.2px; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1.1111rem 0px 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</h5>
<h5 style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #5b84ca; font-family: lexia, Rockwell, Georgia, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 1.2px; line-height: 1.5; margin: 1.1111rem 0px 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Belief 5: Fluoride only helps before the teeth erupt.</h5>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
While we know that too much fluoride can injure developing teeth, we also know that some fluoride can strengthen developing teeth. This was a theory at one time, that fluoride could only be incorporated into developing teeth. According to this theory, only young children would benefit from fluoride since they were the only ones who were still growing new teeth.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
We now know that fluoride on the surface of the teeth helps minerals reattach to teeth, so even fully grown teeth benefit from fluoride therapy. A <a href="https://carifree.com/product/ctx4-gel-1100/" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%, rgb(170, 217, 123) 50%); background-position: center calc(100% - 3px); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-size: 100% 1px; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; margin: 0px; outline: none !important; padding: 0px 1px 3px; text-decoration-line: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out; vertical-align: baseline;">toothpaste with minerals and fluoride</a> is the most effective home care product, when used properly, to avoid white spot lesions.</div>
<div style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #72777e; font-family: adelle-sans, Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-variant-ligatures: none; letter-spacing: 0.025rem; line-height: 1.5; margin-top: 1.1111rem; outline: none !important; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSkUvgzH7XryJJymFA6-VkBhT8b5Uf2472QkLpkYECsBPble1uRJ_ba9ERu-ybI67nY1MpwfdIlKVXe_5Zm_UTLENFz66gRaBPL-HW-8j4X4BIN6AAGnPTJrrcaYVBjt550XaV19tAP5c/s1600/RW43_July_PMT_Blog_1200x600_v0.1_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="1200" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSkUvgzH7XryJJymFA6-VkBhT8b5Uf2472QkLpkYECsBPble1uRJ_ba9ERu-ybI67nY1MpwfdIlKVXe_5Zm_UTLENFz66gRaBPL-HW-8j4X4BIN6AAGnPTJrrcaYVBjt550XaV19tAP5c/s320/RW43_July_PMT_Blog_1200x600_v0.1_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Did you know there are five distinct stages of tooth decay? And, that in the first stage of decay, you
can actually take steps to reverse the progression of the disease? Indeed, it’s true. In the first stage
of decay, whether you’re a child or an adult, the application of fluoride via fluoride treatments, your
toothpaste and even the local water supply can stop a cavity from penetrating through the enamel
and reaching its second stage. Even the saliva in your mouth and the foods you eat help to re-mineralize
a tooth in jeopardy. But that’s just the first stage! What about the rest? Understanding how a
cavity progresses can assist you in preventing each successive stage from occurring in your
children. There’s always a lot going on in that little mouth!<br />
<br />
Stage One: White Spots
In stage one, the tooth begins to show signs of strain from the attack of sugars and acids, and
white spots will begin to materialize just below the surface of the enamel. These white spots are
representative of the demineralization of the tooth and can be easy to miss because they’re likely
to occur on your child’s molars. A dental exam, of course, is designed to catch such cavities! Can
you see why regular visits to the dentist are recommended? As mentioned previously, at this
stage, the cavity can be repaired without the need to excavate the tooth.<br />
<br />
Stage Two: Enamel Decay
Stage two marks the beginning of the end for the surface enamel that is being attacked.
Initially, the tooth erodes from the underside outward, so the outer enamel will still be intact
for the first half of this second stage. Once the cavity breaks through the surface of the
enamel, there is no turning back, and your child will need to have the cavity corrected with a
filling.<br />
<br />
Stage Three: Dentin Decay
If a cavity in your child’s mouth were to progress beyond stage two without you knowing,
you’d tend become aware of it when it started to hit stage three because it would probably
start to cause some pain. At this level, the cavity begins to eat away at the second level of
tooth material that lies beneath the enamel: the dentin. A filling can still be used to stop the
onslaught of bacteria assaulting the tooth in order to prevent the cavity from reaching the
tooth’s most critical component: the pulp.<br />
<br />
Stage Four: Involvement of The Pulp
Once the cavity reaches the pulp, it’s going to hurt. A lot. So if you’ve unfortunately missed all
the signs to this point, a screaming child or moaning teenager will certainly let you know there
is a big problem. Stage four is serious, and a root canal is the only option of treatment at this
stage, save for a complete extraction.<br />
<br />
Stage Five: Abscess Formation
In the fifth and final stage of a cavity, the infection has reached the tip of the root and exited
the tip of the tooth’s structure. This in turn infects the surrounding tissues and possibly the
bone structure. Swelling would be commonplace and pain severe. In children (as well as
adults) an abscess can be fatal if not dealt with promptly. Root canal or extraction would
be the order of the day should decay reach this stage. Need to see us? Give a call at 208-664-9225.<br />
<br />
As you can see, cavities don’t happen overnight. In the early stages, regular visits can stall and
reverse the progression of these dastardly little devils, so it really does pay to visit the dentist
at pre-selected intervals. You can keep your kids far from stage five their whole lives, and if a
little bit of prodding to get them to the dentist accomplishes that, you can rest easy despite
the griping.<br />

<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Having to visit the dentist every six months may not be the appointment that everyone looks forward to, but it is one of the most important ones to keep. If you have found yourself wondering what the point of having regular dental checkups and cleanings really is, we’ve got something for you to think about.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
If you are considering skipping a dental checkup because of cost or another factor like time or dental anxiety, make sure to consider all the risks. What you might end up paying in the long run for not visiting your dentist will likely be much higher, both for your wallet and your peace of mind. Here are some of the most important reasons why you should see your dentist regularly:<span id="more-3932" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box;"></span></div>
<h2 style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #2b2b2b; font-size: 29.25px; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: -0.8px; line-height: 48px; margin: 24px 0px; padding: 0px;">
1. Oral Cancer Detection</h2>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
<a href="https://www.123dentist.com/why-are-oral-cancer-screenings-important/" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0073cf; text-decoration-line: none;">Oral cancer</a> is an extremely serious disease that manifests itself in various ways. Without knowing the signs of its early onset, oral cancer is often not diagnosed and can quickly progress and become life threatening. But thankfully, an early stage oral cancer diagnosis is often easily treatable.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Your dentist is highly trained to recognize these signs and symptoms, and with regular dental checkups every six months the likelihood of catching oral cancer in time is dramatically higher. Recognizing oral cancer in its early stages is key in treating it successfully, and while you may not notice oral abnormalities, your dentist will.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
A VELscope Cancer exam is non-invasive, entirely pain-free, is covered by MSP in some cases, and lasts only a minute or two at most. The exam catches invisible signs of dead tissue caused by tumors forming by shining a special light inside the mouth. Takes very little time, totally painless, and could save your life? It’s a no-brainer!</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<h2 style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #2b2b2b; font-size: 29.25px; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: -0.8px; line-height: 48px; margin: 24px 0px; padding: 0px;">
2. Plaque, Tartar, and Cavities</h2>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Even with the most diligent daily brushers and flossers, there are still small areas in the mouth that are missed by a regular brushing and flossing. When <a href="https://www.123dentist.com/how-to-control-plaque-build-up-on-your-teeth/" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0073cf; text-decoration-line: none;">plaque builds up</a> it becomes more difficult to remove, solidifying and turning into tartar, which is extremely difficult to get rid of without professional help.</div>
</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Regular dental cleanings prevent tartar from eroding teeth or creating holes in them, which is how cavities are created. Cavities rarely give any warning signs as they form, only resulting in a small ache once the tooth is already decayed. Once the damage has been done, you will have to go back to the dentist to have cavities and other tooth problems filled and fixed. This can all be avoided with regular cleanings that take care of plaque and tartar before it becomes destructive.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
A cleaning appointment is also more affordable than getting a filling, so if money’s tight you should make sure not to miss the cleanings!</div>
<h2 style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #2b2b2b; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 29.25px; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: -0.8px; line-height: 48px; margin: 24px 0px; padding: 0px;">
3. Gum Disease</h2>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Plaque and tartar buildup not only cause tooth decay but can also erode the mouth’s gum tissues. This happens when tartar buildup causes an infection where the gum is connected to the tooth, making the gum pull away from the tooth. This infection is known as gingivitis and as it progresses the tissue that attaches gums to the teeth breaks down.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="iStock_000020178715Small" class="alignright" height="257" src="https://dentist123-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/iStock_000020178715Small-386x257.jpg" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; float: right; height: auto; margin-left: 1.5em; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="386" />Once it reaches this point it is officially gum disease, and only at this point will there likely be any swelling, bleeding, or soreness in the mouth. Along with the breakdown of gum tissue, gum disease also causes a breakdown of the bone that holds teeth in place. At this point it is common to see teeth loosening or falling out altogether and drastic treatment methods will have to be taken by a dental specialist.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Not only do specialists require more appointments and likely a blow to your wallet, but treatment of gum disease, depending on the severity, can include surgery, extremely deep cleaning, and medication. To avoid all of this, regular dental cleanings are essential in catching and addressing gingivitis before it gets out of hand.</div>
<h2 style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #2b2b2b; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 29.25px; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: -0.8px; line-height: 48px; margin: 24px 0px; padding: 0px;">
4. Keeping Bad Habits in Check</h2>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="Smoking addict" class="alignright" height="257" src="https://dentist123-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/iStock_000019963864Small-386x257.jpg" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; float: right; height: auto; margin-left: 1.5em; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="386" /></div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
There are many <a href="https://www.123dentist.com/7-habits-that-are-bad-for-your-oral-health/" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); background-color: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; color: #0073cf; text-decoration-line: none;">bad habits that can have a negative impact</a> on your oral health, some of which you may not even realize are causing issues. Some of these habits include chewing ice, biting your nails, clenching your jaw, grinding your teeth, eating particularly sticky or hard sweets, brushing your teeth too hard, drinking coffee and red wine, and of course smoking.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
When you go for regular dental checkups, your dentist can check for any oral damage caused by these or other habits which you may otherwise not have noticed. Being informed about specific destructive habits allows you to change or alter your lifestyle choice to prevent further damage. Visiting the dentist allows you to fix the damage that has already been done, and help your oral health be the best it can be.</div>
<h2 style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #2b2b2b; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 29.25px; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: -0.8px; line-height: 48px; margin: 24px 0px; padding: 0px;">
5. Find Problems Under the Surface With X-Rays</h2>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
A crucial part of visiting your dentist every six months is getting your teeth and jaw bone x-rayed. X-ray images allow dental professionals to see what is happening beneath the surfaces of your mouth, and can find and diagnose issues that may be invisible to the naked eye. Problems like this can include impacted teeth, which are growing teeth that are blocked from pushing through the gum line, as often seen in wisdom teeth.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="Dental X-Ray" class="alignright" height="257" src="https://dentist123-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/iStock_000024463449Small-393x257.jpg" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; float: right; height: auto; margin-left: 1.5em; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="393" />Damage to the jawbone can also be pinpointed as well as any bone decay, swelling, cysts, or tumours, all of which are impossible to actually see without x-ray imaging. Finding these or any other major oral issues as soon as possible is critical in order to properly treat them.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Especially with destructive diseases that show little to no symptoms but progress quickly, up-to-date x-rays and bi-annual checkups are the best way to keep on top of your health.</div>
<h2 style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #2b2b2b; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 29.25px; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: -0.8px; line-height: 48px; margin: 24px 0px; padding: 0px;">
6. Head, Neck, and Lymph Node Checks</h2>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
<img alt="iStock_000032122518Small" class="alignright" height="350" src="https://dentist123-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/iStock_000032122518Small.jpg" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: inline; float: right; height: auto; margin-left: 1.5em; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="350" />In addition to checking your mouth, gums, and tongue for signs or oral cancer, your dentist will also check your neck, jaw, and lymph nodes, located just below your jawline, for any swelling, lumps, or other abnormalities. If an abnormality is found it could be a sign of a major health issue, and your dentist will alert you to it and refer you the appropriate medical professional.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Swollen lymph nodes are a particular area that do not necessarily hurt or seem out of the ordinary but when identified properly by a professional could be a sign of certain kinds of cancer or other diseases that require immediate attention. Not having regular dental checkups drastically cuts down how often your neck and thyroid glands are checked. So while looking for abnormalities only takes your dentist a minute, it could mean an extremely serious disease is identified early enough to make a huge difference.</div>
<h2 style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; clear: both; color: #2b2b2b; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 29.25px; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: -0.8px; line-height: 48px; margin: 24px 0px; padding: 0px;">
So, Are Dental Checkups Worth the Effort?</h2>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Dentists and dental professionals are not only concerned with fixing teeth. They professionally clean your teeth, aim to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy, and check for abnormalities that may otherwise go unnoticed and could be a sign of larger health issues. Dental professionals make sure that your bones are strong, and will help you correct any habits that may be sabotaging your oral health, among other things.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Skipping dental appointments may not seem like a big deal, but oral issues can develop and progress extremely quickly whether or not you notice it. By keeping on top of your dental cleanings and checkups you’re doing yourself a big favour in the long run.</div>
<div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.84); font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 14px; letter-spacing: 0px; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 16px; padding: 0px;">
Here’s wishing you a great year of oral health!</div>

His words went viral, starting with his advice that no matter what you do, if you want <a href="https://www.inc.com/bill-murphy-jr/want-to-raise-successful-kids-science-says-praise-them-like-this-most-parents-do.html" style="border: 0px; color: #009cd8; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">to be successful</a>, you should <a href="https://www.inc.com/bill-murphy-jr/10-things-to-learn-from-this-years-best-graduation-speech.html" style="border: 0px; color: #009cd8; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">make your bed</a> in the morning.</div>

<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
1. Start your day with a task completed.</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
If you want to be successful in life, start by making your bed every day.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
McRaven talks about how in the grueling six-month Navy SEAL training, he made his thin bed according to his instructors' meticulous standards, and how the habit sustained him for four decades. He also talks about seeing Saddam Hussein after he'd been captured by American forces in Iraq in 2003--and noticing that he never bothered to make the Army cot in his cell.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Sometimes the simple act of making your bed can give the lift you need to start your day and provide you the satisfaction to end it right," McRaven says.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
2. You can't go it alone.</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
Every leadership book out there includes this advice, but McRaven has some of the best anecdotes supporting it. He talks about SEAL training again, focusing on how small teams of wanna-be SEALs were required to work together and haul a heavy rubber boat with them wherever they went.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
But years after training, when McRaven was a high-ranking commander and was badly injured in a parachuting accident, he learned what this really meant, crediting all of the people who forced him to believe in himself, to recover, and to save his own career--starting with his wife and including the friends who visited him and the senior admiral who helped him navigate the Navy bureaucracy.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
"You cannot paddle alone. Find someone to share your life with. Make as many friends as possible, and never forget that your success depends on others," McRaven writes.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
3. Only the size of your heart matters.</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
I'm barely 5-foot-7, so I love this advice: It's more about the size of the fight in the dog than the size of the dog in the fight.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
In his speech at Texas, McRaven talked about his respect for a very tough crew of SEAL trainees, the tallest of whom was only 5-foot-5. In <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">Make Your Bed</em>, he talks about meeting one of the most decorated SEALs from Vietnam--a diminutive man who was a Medal of Honor recipient and who had gone behind enemy lines many times to save downed airmen.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
Before McRaven knew who the man was, he'd dismissed him in his mind because of his small size. That, he says, was a mistake: "It's not the size of your flippers that count, just the size of your heart."</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
4. Life's not fair. Drive on!</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
Often, during SEAL training in San Diego, McRaven writes, the instructors would punish students for small infractions, or even no infraction, by requiring them to run fully clothed into the Pacific Ocean, then roll around in the sand until they looked like a "sugar cookie." As a result, they'd face a very uncomfortable day, cold, wet, and sandy.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Do you have any idea why you are a sugar cookie this morning?" an instructor who'd punished McRaven asked him once. "Because...life isn't fair, and the sooner you learn that, the better off you will be."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
As McRaven writes, sometimes life just sucks through no fault of your own. The most successful among us accept it--and drive forward anyway.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
5. Failure can make you stronger.</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
This is another one of those pieces of advice that you hear from many leadership experts, but it just has a little more <em style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">oomph</em> coming from McRaven.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
He talks about how failure literally made him stronger during SEAL training, when, as a result of coming in last on a distance swim exercise, he and another SEAL were punished with an extra two hours of physical training each day.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
The punishment was known as the "circus," and it was no fun. But a funny thing happened, McRaven writes: While the circus could have broken them, it made him and his fellow SEAL trainee stronger. Eventually, they were the best swimmers in their class.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
6. You must dare greatly.</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
SEAL training included a daunting obstacle course, and McRaven talks about how he had to be willing to dive down a 200-foot "slide for life" headfirst to have any chance of finishing it in time. It was risky, and scary--but effective.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
He also talks about one instance in which this same willingness to dare greatly led him to authorize an incredibly risky helicopter rescue of prisoners in Iraq. The mission was successful--but being willing to take risks means knowing you'll likely fail at least sometimes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Life is a struggle and the potential for failure is ever present," McRaven writes, "but those who live in fear of failure, or hardship, or embarrassment, will never achieve their potential. Without pushing your limits, without occasionally sliding down the rope headfirst, without daring greatly, you will never know what is truly possible in your life."</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
7. Stand up to the bullies.</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
McRaven talks about being scared of sharks during SEAL training--quite understandably, since the waters off San Diego, where they swam for hours each day, were full of them. Facing the sharks was just one price of becoming a SEAL.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
He also talks about another experience later in his career, again after the United States had captured Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Even as a deposed despot and prisoner, Hussein managed to intimidate the Iraqi leaders who came to see him. So, McRaven ordered him isolated and humbled, so that when the Iraqi leaders met him again, they wouldn't be afraid.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
"In life, to achieve your goals, to compete the night swim, you will have to be men and women of great courage. That courage is within all of us. Dig deep, and you will find it in abundance," McRaven writes.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
8. Rise to the occasion.</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
Among other missions, Navy SEALs conduct underwater attacks against enemy ships. That requires swimming several miles underwater, "using nothing but a depth gauge and a compass to get to their target," McRaven writes.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
It's scary as heck. But the true moments of rising to the occasion, McRaven writes, came later--when he was commanding soldiers and SEALs and had to watch men react to the deaths of some of their comrades in arms.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
"At some point, we will all confront a dark moment in life. If not the passing of a loved one, then something else that crushes your spirit and leaves you wondering about your future. In that dark moment, reach deep inside yourself and be your very best," McRaven writes.</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
9. Give people hope.</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
McRaven talks about a SEAL training exercise in the freezing mud that pushed him and his classmates to the limits. Their instructors promised that if five students would quit, the rest of their class would be allowed to sit by a fire and warm up. Instead of quitting, he said, the students started singing, and thus inspiring each other to endure.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
Many years later, McRaven recounts losing soldiers in combat--and seeing the example of a Marine general named John Kelly as he met with families of the fallen. The general's rapport with families came from his own tragedy, as his son had been killed in Afghanistan.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Without ever knowing it, John Kelly gave all those around him hope," McRaven writes. "Hope that in the very worst of times we could rise above the pain, the disappointment, the agony, and be strong.... Hope is the most powerful force in the universe."</div>
<h2 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: KlavikaBoldCondensed; font-size: 26px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin: 20px 0px 5px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
10. Never, ever quit!</h2>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
Students in SEAL training can quit at any time--in McRaven's class, 150 students began with him, and only 33 graduated. Symbolically, students who quit are required to go to the center of the training compound and ring a brass bell three times.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
On the first day of training, an instructor told McRaven and his classmates that his goal was to push them to ring that bell, but also told them: "If you quit, you will regret it for the rest of your life. Quitting never makes anything easier."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
McRaven focuses on one time in particular when that lesson really became clear to him, when a 19-year-old Army Ranger under his command was wounded in combat and lost both of his legs. A year later, the soldier was still on active duty, never quitting, his prosthetic legs hidden by his uniform trousers.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">
"Life is full of difficult times," McRaven writes. "But someone out there always has it worse than you do.... Never, ever, ring the bell!"</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: RobotoRegular, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 12px; padding: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline;">

The left side of Jacquelyn Garcia’s face throbbed fiercely. She had tried taking Tylenol and Excedrin for the pain, but threw them up. On a Monday morning straight after working the night shift as a custodian, she rushed to the N.Y.U. emergency dental clinic. Here a student delivered the verdict: decay so deep it had reached the nerve. The tooth needed to be pulled.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
Paradoxically, this could make her mouth worse off. Dentists say pulling a tooth can lead to a cascade of other problems: the teeth start shifting, the bone diminishes, the skin sags and the risk of gum disease increases. But Ms. Garcia didn’t have any choice. Her tooth had been rotting from the inside out for more than a year. She didn’t have dental insurance and didn’t want to pay the high fees until the pain had surged and she couldn’t stand it anymore.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
As Americans debate medical coverage, the problem of our teeth has remained almost entirely unaddressed. About 114 million Americans don’t have insurance coverage for their teeth – <a href="http://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2016/dec/state-progress-coverage-and-access" style="color: #326891;">more than twice</a> the number of people who didn’t have health insurance before the Affordable Care Act.<span id="more-14460"></span></div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
“Oral health is a neglected issue nationally,” said Julia Paradise, an associate director of the program on Medicaid and the Uninsured at the Kaiser Family Foundation. “This is a big problem. The mouth and the head – mental health and dental health – somehow remain outside of what people think of as general health.”</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
Lots of people (including politicians) think of dental care as a luxury – pleasant, sure, but not vital. But that’s just not true, experts say. Gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and among pregnant women it is correlated with lower birth weights for their babies.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
“It’s a lot more than just having a pretty smile,” said Peter Polverini, a dean emeritus at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. “It’s not uncommon that you wind up with people being hospitalized because they can’t afford care.” Emergency room visits for dental problems – when teeth are often too ruined to save — cost the U.S. health care system an <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/06/29/er-dental-visits/29492599/" style="color: #326891;">estimated $1.6 billion</a> a year.</div>

It’s virtually an accident of history that dental care isn’t considered part of medical care. The medieval barber-surgeon used to attend to all the human ailments that required a knife: bloodletting, tooth extraction, shaving. In the 1840s in the United States, the heirs to the tradition wanted to become professionals; they didn’t want to keep <a href="http://journalofethics.ama-assn.org/2010/02/mhst1-1002.html" style="color: #326891;">wandering from town to town</a> selling their services. They asked physicians at the Medical College at the University of Maryland if they would include dentistry in the medical coursework, but the physicians refused. Soon after the dentists opened a separate dental school nearby.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
This “historic rebuff,” as some historians have called it, is the creation myth of modern dentistry. The central tension in the tale – the separation between doctors and dentists (and the health of the mouth and the health of the body) – continues to plague patients today.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
Obamacare doesn’t require plans to include dental coverage for adults and Medicaid has no required adult dental benefits, so coverage varies widely state-by-state, and even year-to-year. In addition, more than 51 million people live in federally designated “<a href="https://ersrs.hrsa.gov/ReportServer?/HGDW_Reports/BCD_HPSA/BCD_HPSA_SCR50_Qtr_Smry_HTML&rc:Toolbar=false" style="color: #326891;">dental professional shortage areas</a>,” where there are simply not enough providers to cover the need, according to Mary Otto’s new book <a href="http://thenewpress.com/books/teeth" style="color: #326891;"><em>Teeth</em></a>. In many places, Medicaid offers such skimpy reimbursements that dentists don’t want to participate.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
Experts have long observed that people’s teeth both reflect and reinforce poverty.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
“I’ve been a public health researcher for about 25 years. I’ve worked with a lot of different populations of people,” said Harold Pollack, a scholar of poverty at the University of Chicago. “One common element of every severely vulnerable population I’ve worked with is people always have bad teeth. And they have always borne a real stigma for that.”</div>

In New York, non-profits, teaching schools, and clinics that receive federal money have popped up to fill the demand for care, but the result is a patchwork system.</div>

At the N.Y.U. School of Dentistry, some patients suffer traumatic injuries, but others simply never had preventative care and have reached the point of emergency. Dr. Laurie Fleisher, the amiable director of urgent care, recalled seeing a sixteen-year-old girl who hadn’t been to the dentist in five years. She came to the clinic in terrible pain. Neither the mother nor her daughter had realized how bad the damage to the girl’s teeth was, and soon they were both crying.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
“I have to turn away sometimes, walk out,” said Dr. Fleisher. “Because I cry.”</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
In attempts to cheaply stem tooth pain, patients sometimes make their problems worse. Dr. Fleisher said she regularly sees patients crush aspirin onto their gums, hoping to soothe their mouths; instead, it burns away the gum tissue.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
At the <a href="http://www.institute.org/" style="color: #326891;">Institute for Family Health</a> clinic in Harlem, which receives federal funds to treat the uninsured, a couple described taking two buses and a train from Long Island to reach an affordable dentist.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
Dentists at the Institute recently saw a 12-year-old girl with such swollen gums that they wrote a case study about her to teach other medical professionals. “Kate,” as they refer to her in the study, had dental troubles that were affecting nearly every aspect of her life. She weighed only 69 pounds, likely because she was drinking liquids to avoid chewing. She barely spoke and rarely participated in school; her mother said she was bullied.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
In the South Bronx, Diana Cardona works as a dentist out of a giant blue truck, in a program run by the <a href="https://www.childrenshealthfund.org/" style="color: #326891;">Children’s Health Fund</a> and the <a href="http://www.cham.org/programs-centers/community-pediatrics-program" style="color: #326891;">Children’s Hospital at Montefiore</a>. The program gets federal funds to serve poor communities.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
“Can you fix this?” a woman once asked as she spat six crowns into her hand one by one.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
Dr. Cardona sees patients who haven’t been to the dentist in decades, who tell her they don’t want to work in the front of the office, or talk to people, because they’re too humiliated by their teeth. They fear that rotting teeth will be seen as evidence of poverty, homelessness, or bad hygiene. (“My family’s distress over our teeth – what food might hurt or save them, whether having them pulled was a mistake – reveals the psychological hell of having poor teeth in a rich, capitalist country,” the essayist <a href="https://aeon.co/essays/there-is-no-shame-worse-than-poor-teeth-in-a-rich-world" style="color: #326891;">Sarah Smarsh wrote</a>.)</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
Dentists and public health officials say ignorance and indifference are primary reasons dental care still isn’t included in general healthcare nationwide. Burton Edelstein, a professor at Columbia’s College of Dental Medicine, recounted a visit to lawmakers, seeking an adult dental benefit.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
Lawmakers quickly rebuffed him, he recalled, saying in effect, “Dental doesn’t matter. Adults can take care of themselves.”</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
So the advocates tried again, pitching a dental benefit for disabled adults to the lawmakers. That didn’t work. Finally, they proposed something even more minimal: dental care for pregnant women. Lawmakers refused.</div>
<div class="story-body-text" itemprop="articleBody" style="color: #333333; font-family: georgia, "times new roman", times, serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">
As Julia Paradise from Kaiser noted, “Unlike a lot of chronic disease where we’re still struggling with the science of how to prevent these diseases, we know how to do this in oral health. This is actually a problem we can solve.”</div>

When it comes to diet trends, there are a few heavyweights that top the list, including the low-carb, low-fat, South Beach® and Atkins® diets. There are, however, a few others gaining speed, including vegan, slow-carb and Paleo. All of these diets have negatives and plusses, and generally speaking, most physicians advise patients to pursue a “balanced” approach appropriate to your physical makeup, habits and lifestyle. The open-ended question is: are these diets good or bad for your teeth? We’ve looked at<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://www.patientconnect365.com/DentalHealthTopics/Article/Can_a_MeatFree_Diet_Be_Bad_for_Your_Teeth">a few others</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>already, so let’s look at The Paleo Diet®.</div>

<br /><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;">What is The Paleo Diet?</span></span><br /><br />The Paleo Diet takes its lead from the food consumption habits of humans who lived in the Paleolithic era – the period between about 2.5 million and 20,000 years ago. These hunter-gatherers, who lived during the period more commonly referred to as The Stone Age, lived on a diet of wild plants and animals. The Paleo Diet is modern man’s attempt to mimic that consumption pattern.<br /><br /><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;">Meat, Fresh Fruit, and Veggies. What’s not to Like?</span></span><br /><br />At first glance, Paleo’s recommendation to focus on lean meats, fish, fruit, and vegetables, seems like the perfect plan for healthy living. And, to a large degree, if you<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><em>were</em><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>to fill your refrigerator with these foods, your doctor<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><em>would</em><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>be pretty happy with your decision.<br /><br />That said, because Paleo excludes dairy and grains, your doctor<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><em>and</em><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>your dentist might ask you to aim for a bit more balance once you’ve achieved any weight loss goals you might be chasing. Let’s see how the Paleo plan stacks up when it comes to your teeth. </div>

<span style="color: black;">Positive Oral Health Aspects of a Paleo Diet</span></h1>
<ul style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #616161; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><strong><span style="color: black;">Fiber:</span></strong><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>We could all use more fiber, and with all the fruit and vegetables you’re going to be consuming, getting the 22-34 grams a day recommended for adults should be a breeze. Your teeth will love you for it as well, because fiber has somewhat of a<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?ContentTypeID=1&ContentID=4062">detergent effect</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>on your mouth, scrubbing away plaque and debris as you chew. This is one reason why celery is great for teeth – it’s like built-in floss!</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Potassium:</strong></span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Bones (like the ones that comprise your jaw and hold your teeth in place!) love potassium, and it’s a difficult nutrient to get unless you’re consuming a ton of bananas and V-8® juice. Muscles, too, thrive on potassium, so if you’re an athlete, or just someone who likes to remain active, you’ll likely notice the boost you’re getting from higher numbers of fruits and vegetables.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Vitamin B-12:</strong></span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Thank your lean meats and fish for good numbers in this area. B Vitamins are essential for healthy gum tissue, and on a Paleo diet you’ll have no problem accumulating the recommended 2.4 micrograms a day.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Vitamin C:</strong></span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>We all know Vitamin C is good for us, and once again, it’s fruit to the rescue. Vitamin C is critical in the development of collagen and healthy gum tissue and has the added benefit of keeping you<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="https://www.patientconnect365.com/dentalhealthtopics/article/vitamin_c_keeps_scurvy_and_gingivitis_at_bay_4">free from the ravages of scurvy</a>. Not a bad deal.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Low-Glycemic Carbs:</strong></span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Since you’ll be avoiding all sorts of refined sugars and starchy vegetables on The Paleo Diet, your teeth are going to get a break from the sticky sugars that are the primary cause of teeth decay. As we always say, what’s good for your waistline is often good for your teeth.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Unprocessed Oils, Nuts and Seeds:</strong></span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Healthy fats from olive and sesame oils, avocados, nuts and seeds protect teeth by helping them re-mineralize. When it comes to nuts, though, binge eating is a real concern – don’t eat too many if you’re concerned about your fat intake.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><strong><span style="color: black;">A Healthy Reliance on Water:</span></strong><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>The Paleo Diet shuns beverages that are bad for your teeth. Nut milks are okay when unsweetened, but water remains the beverage of choice for the majority of Paleos. Is water good for your teeth? You betcha. Swish it around and remove all that junk from your teeth, stimulate saliva flow, and keep that oral cavity properly hydrated!</li>
</ul>
<h1 style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: black; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 30px; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
Oral Health Concerns with the Paleo Diet</h1>
<ul style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #616161; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Getting Energy from Sticky Fruit:</strong></span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Carbohydrates provide the fuel our bodies need to function, and the majority of us meet those needs with grains first, and vegetables second. However, since The Paleo Diet avoids grains, and consuming the larger volumes of vegetables necessary to get the same amount of energycan prove difficult for most adherents, many opt to get their carb boost from the natural sugars in fruit.<br /><br />While this isn’t a terrible idea (fruitarians, for example, consume only fruit), many Paleo dieters rely on dried fruit – which give you energy in spades, but are bad for your teeth because they tend to stick. So, keep a toothbrush and floss handy if you find yourself overdoing it on dried fruit.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Excessive Fruit Acid:<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></strong></span>Lots of fresh fruit means lots of fruit acid – and, that’s bad for tooth enamel. Choose<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://www.acidalkalinediet.com/alkaline-foods/acidic-fruits-and-the-fruits-low-in-acid">less acidic versions</a><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>as often as possible, and keep a bottle of water handy to rinse between portions. Also, be sure to wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing. Doing so earlier can drive the acids in your mouth deeper into your teeth. Not good!|</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>Lack of Vitamin D, Magnesium, Calcium and Iron:</strong></span><span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>While supplements can appear to solve just about any nutrient deficiency, any doctor or nutritionist will also tell you there’s nothing like getting your nutrition in its original package. Paleo fans will find they’re lacking in a few vitamins essential to healthy teeth and bones (not to mention an overall healthy body), and may wish to consider supplementation if on the diet long term. Please know that it can be harmful to over consume some nutrients, especially if you’re already taking a multi-vitamin, so do not supplement without consulting with your physician.</li>
<li style="margin-top: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><strong>No Dairy:<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span></strong></span>No yogurt. No cheese. No milk. No exceptions. You’ll find many arguments for and against dairy out there, and for some populations with allergies, or intolerance, it’s something that has to be avoided no matter what. The trouble for Paleo dieters, though, is without a medical necessity preventing the consumption of dairy, avoiding this entire food group does lessen opportunities for teeth to repair themselves through the natural process of re-mineralization. And while meat does play a role in re-mineralizing,<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><a href="http://www.dentistryiq.com/articles/2013/06/dairy-does-the-mouth-good-new-dental-research-shows-cheese-may-p.html">dairy is by far the bigger player</a>.</li>

Backpack? Check. Booster shots? Check. Teeth cleaning? Check!<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Regular dental visits are important year-round, but a <a href="http://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/babies-and-kids/questions-for-school-dental-exam" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #0077c3; text-decoration: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out;">back-to-school checkup</a> is key in fighting the most common chronic disease found in school-age children:<a href="http://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/c/cavities" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #0077c3; text-decoration: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out;">cavities</a>. In fact, dental disease causes children to miss more than 51 million school hours each year. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Prevention and early detection can help avoid pain, trouble eating, difficulty speaking and school absences. “When people are beginning to do their pediatrician checks to make sure their kids are school-ready, make sure teeth are part of it,” says pediatric dentist and American Dental Association spokesperson Dr. Mary Hayes. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #319b47; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.4em;">
Plan Ahead</h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #505050; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;">
Between cookouts, camping trips and everything else on your family’s summer bucket list, it’s easy for school to sneak up on you. Unfortunately, many parents may not think about making that appointment until August, which Dr. Hayes says is one of her busiest times. “The rush is pretty intense,” she says. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Give yourself enough time by making it a habit to call when your child gets her spring report card each year. “Planning ahead is good,” Dr. Hayes says. “If families want to avoid the rush to go back to school in August, then plan on getting appointments for the beginning of the summer.” <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #319b47; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.4em;">
Encourage Age-Appropriate Dental Habits at Home</h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #505050; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;">
The best kind of checkup is a cavity-free checkup. Moms and dads can help make this happen by encouraging kids to brush twice a day for two minutes and floss once a day. Here’s Dr. Hayes’ age-by-age advice:<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Ages 6 and Under</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><a href="http://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/babies-and-kids/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #0077c3; text-decoration: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out;">At this age</a>, your child might want to do all the brushing herself but doesn’t have the fine motor skills needed to do a thorough job. Let them start and jump in when needed. “During that age, the mouth is changing so much that children who are 5 or 6 are often brushing their teeth in the way they were when they were 2 or 3,” Dr. Hayes says. “They’re not accommodating the new molars, and they’re not accommodating the fact that the mouth is growing.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Ages 7-12</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />By now, your child knows what to do, she just might not want to. Keep encouraging healthy brushing and flossing habits. “Be aware of the fact that sometimes you have to take over a little bit more,” she says. “By the time they’re teenagers, they’re starting to understand self-care, accountability for their actions and such.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">Ages 12-18</strong><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Dr. Hayes says this is a critical time for dental health. “When you look at research for when caries appear in kids, it tends to be in young kids. But another bump-up time is teenage years and early adulthood,” she says. “Part of this has to do with the fact that teenagers may have gone for many years and never had a cavity. They don’t necessarily take care of their teeth because they don’t see the consequence of not.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Don’t let your <a href="http://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/Teens/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #0077c3; text-decoration: none; transition: all 0.3s ease-in-out;">teen’s habits</a> become out of sight, out of mind. “The behaviors of the teenager are going to translate into the 20-year-old. We want to be able to support them and be respectful of them because they’re not kids anymore.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #319b47; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.4em;">
Timing Is Everything</h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #505050; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;">
Time of day can make or break your child’s appointment. “It’s important for a child of any age who’s used to a nap to not schedule during naptime,” she says. If your child is always cranky after waking up, factor that in too. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />For older children, avoid cramming in a dentist appointment right after day camp or school. “Not all kids have the energy to do that,” she says. “I will have parents who want to do very elaborate operative work after school because that’s when the kids can come out. But if the child has already been exhausted or had a bad day or had tests, they just don’t have the stamina to make it through the appointment successfully.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #319b47; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.4em;">
Make One Child a Model</h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #505050; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;">
If you’ve scheduled back-to-back appointments for your children, there’s a simple way to decide who goes first: Choose the child who’s had the most positive experiences at the dentist. “Every child is going to be a little bit different in their temperament about how they approach a visit,” she says. “You generally want the ones first who are more successful because the others get to see how it goes.” <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #319b47; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.4em;">
A Hungry Child Is Not a Happy Patient</h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #505050; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;">
Feed your child a light meal before the appointment. “Hungry people are grouchy people. You want them to be comfortable,” she says. “It’s also generally a good idea not to feed them in the waiting room before you see the dentist because there’s all that food in [their mouth].”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Eating light is also better for a child with a healthy gag reflex. “Some children gag a lot just because they gag with everything,” she says. “As they age and they get more control over swallowing, kids tend to gag less.” <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Bonus points if your child brushes before an appointment. “It’s polite,” Dr. Hayes says.<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #319b47; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.4em;">
Leave Your Anxiety at the Door</h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #505050; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;">
If your heart races at the very thought of the dentist, your child can probably tell. “Kids pick up on parents’ anxiety,” Dr. Hayes says. “It’s important with kids, especially at 4, 5 and 6, because I believe the phobic adults are the ones who had bad experiences when they were that age.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />The younger your kids are, the more you need to be aware of how you’re communicating with them. For example, if your child asks about getting a cavity filled, don’t say, “It will only hurt for a little bit.” Instead, encourage your child to ask the dentist. “With any child, you want them to be able to feel successful at accomplishing a good visit and link that positive feeling with the idea that their teeth are strong and healthy so they have that message going forward for the rest of their lives.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #319b47; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.4em;">
Keep Cool If Your Child Won’t Cooperate</h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #505050; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;">
If your child gets upset during her visit, the worst thing you can do is swoop them out of the chair and leave. “The next visit is going to be harder,” Dr. Hayes says. “You still have to help them get through part of the visit.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />First, assess why your child is acting out. Are they truly afraid, or are they trying to test the situation? “One of the reasons I think a 4, 5 or 6-year-old gets upset is because they think they’re going to be asked to do something they can’t be successful at,” she says. “They’re in an environment they feel they can’t control and that makes them upset, so we try to break it down into small steps.”<br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /><br style="box-sizing: border-box;" />Then, work as a team with your dentist to keep the visit going. Let the dentist lead the conversation. Jump in where you think it helps most, while still allowing the dentist and your child to build a good relationship. “Give the dentist every opportunity to turn the visit around,” she says. <br style="box-sizing: border-box;" /></div>
<h3 style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #319b47; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.4em;">
Take a Card (or Three) on Your Way Out</h3>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #505050; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.96px;">
Accidents can happen whether your child is in sports camp, gym class or just walking down the street. In case of emergency, make sure your child’s teachers and coaches have all the medical contact information they need – including your dentist’s number. Grab business cards for your wallet, your child’s backpack and your school’s files. “Parents should be very aware of accidents and make sure that wherever they go that they bring the number of their dentist so that if a child has an accident, they can certainly call the office,” Dr. Hayes says.</div>

But then, your teeth ARE in your head -- so you likely can’t escape having to pay a little more attention to them after the age of 50. Although some oral health concerns are seen as common as we age, if you adopt a proactive mindset and educate yourself, these concerns do not have to be common for you. Anticipating and recognizing changes in your mouth can help you be on top of your health in this area -- so let’s take a look at the main ones you have to watch out for.</span><br />
<ol style="background-color: #f0f0f0;">
<li><strong style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Dry Mouth:</strong><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> The most common oral health concern you’re likely to experience as you age is dry mouth. In the medical world, dry mouth goes by the name xerostomia, and can be brought on by a number of contributing factors, including the over-consumption of drying beverages like coffee and alcohol, as well as the frequent consumption of salty foods. Another big offender is the medication we take over a lifetime to treat various illness. And the list isn’t a short one – there are at least </span></span><a href="http://www.aplaceformom.com/senior-care-resources/articles/senior-dental-problems" style="color: #6dc6dd; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; word-wrap: break-word;">400 medications</a><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"> that can contribute to xerostomia, including medications for high blood pressure and depression. </span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">Many of our Patients manage dry mouth with various methods to include increased saliva production by chewing gum, xylitol lozenges, or xylitol mints. Some prefer mouthrinses like Biotene for dry mouth. Others consume more water. I do like it when people can make more of their own saliva with dry mouth lozenges. </span></span></li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><strong>Ill-fitting Dentures: </strong>First off, it’s important to note that the need for dentures is <em>not</em> a must as we age. Today, healthier living and better access to dental care has <a href="http://www.aplaceformom.com/senior-care-resources/articles/senior-dental-problems" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;">reduced the percentage</a> of seniors wearing dentures to 27% from nearly 50% just a few decades ago. That said, should dentures be a part of your life, or that of a loved one, wearing properly-fitting dentures is critical.Sometimes, all that’s needed is a denture reline<span style="color: red;">. </span>Give us a call at 208-664-9225 to see if we can help.<span style="color: red;"> </span>Dentures that cause pain or shift in the mouth tend to alter a person’s eating habits, which can lead to nutrition deficits if healthy, but hard-to-chew, foods are avoided. Ill-fitting dentures can also cause <a href="http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/dental-care-seniors" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;">thrush</a>.</li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><strong>Physical Obstacles to Good Oral Care: </strong>As we age, we sometimes find ourselves having to contend with physical ailments that limit our desire to maintain good oral care. Arthritis, vision loss, or injuries are a few of the most common. To combat these concerns, using a floss pick to get between teeth can be helpful, and the regular use of oral rinses can assist in dislodging difficult-to-remove food debris, while adding to the overall health of one’s mouth and gum tissue. Here’s how to <a href="https://www.patientconnect365.com/DentalHealthTopics/Article/How_to_Choose_the_Mouthwash_thats_Right_for_You" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;">choose the best mouth rinse</a> for your needs!</li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><strong>Naturally Receding Gums: </strong>The old expression “long in the tooth” isn’t just a quaint idiom about how one accumulates wisdom with age – it also refers to how our teeth appear to “lengthen” as we age. In other words, it’s a fancy way of saying our gums are receding. While some degree of gum <a href="http://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/the-aging-mouth-and-how-to-keep-it-younger-harvard-health-publications" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;">recession is indeed natural as we get up in years</a>, this predisposes us to cavities along the root structure of the tooth where enamel doesn’t exist. So, as one ages, flossing, brushing and rinses are more important than ever.</li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><strong>Gum Disease: </strong>Natural gum recession is one thing, and a part of “growing up,” if you will. <a href="https://www.patientconnect365.com/DentalHealthTopics/Article/Gum_Disease" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;">Gum <em>disease</em></a>, however, is preventable. So, if it’s been longer than six months since you’ve seen us, please do give us a call at 208-664-9225. Each of the above items in this list can contribute to gum disease, and good oral care can prevent it. Failing to do so can lead to a need for dentures at its most extreme, and pain and swollen gums at its least. We’d prefer you experience neither concern!</li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><strong>Tooth Loss: </strong>If a tooth is lost due to trauma or decay, and not replaced with an <a href="https://www.patientconnect365.com/DentalHealthTopics/Article/Dental_Implants__Getting_to_the_Root_of_Things" style="color: #6dc6dd; word-wrap: break-word;">implant</a> or other prosthetic, it can have serious complications for the health of the jawbone. Teeth can shift out of place and fall out, and bone tissue can be resorbed back into the body. Not a good thing.</li>
<li style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;"><strong>Loss of Insurance Coverage: </strong>Retirees without dental coverage can sometimes cover the expense of dental care on their own; sometimes they cannot. But a lack of funds to take care of one’s teeth can be devastating to the health of our mouths, and our overall health. So we need to plan for two things: a care routine that allows us to take care of our teeth as much as humanly possible and some sort of financial backup plan for when problems do arise. So, please do check with our in-office dental plans and multiple payment plans to aid it times when outside dental coverage is low to none. 208-664-9225. GenerationsDentalCDA.com</li>

<br /><br />
<strong>Saving Space for Permanent Teeth with a Space Maintainer</strong> <br />
<br /><br />
If your little one's teeth have begun to fall out, and their permanent replacements appear to be lagging far behind, you may wish to consider a space maintainer to minimize future orthodontic work. Believe it or not, the absence of your child's teeth might seem cute now, but those tiny little gaps can cause deep gouges in your pocketbook as you watch them fill up with teeth that don't belong there. Space maintainers are simple to use, kids get along fine with them, and they have become the de-facto standard for protecting the cosmetic and functional aspects of your growing child's mouth.<br /> <br />
<h3 class="null" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102) !important; display: block; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px; font-style: normal; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 125%; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
Why Your Child Might Need a Space Maintainer</h3>
<br /> When a child's tooth is lost early due to trauma, tooth decay, or nature's insistence that it drop out before its permanent replacement is due, a space maintainer can be used to hold back the natural inclination of teeth to move forward. Without preventing this movement, teeth that should be in the rear of our mouths end up along the sides, and take up precious real estate destined for another tenant. The result is overcrowding, and in some cases impacted teeth. In the end, it's always easier to save the space now, then create it later.<br /> <br />

How They Work</h3>
<br /> Space maintainers are very similar in purpose and design to an adult "bridge," but instead of placing artificial teeth over the gap, the space is kept open to accommodate its future resident.<span style="color: black;"> At Generations Dental</span><span style="color: red;"> </span>we make most space maintainers out of metal, (sometimes both metal and plastic), and custom-mold them to the shape of your child's mouth. In most cases, the maintainer is made up of a metal band attached to a rectangular-shaped wire that butts up against the tooth across the gap. This acts to temporarily preserve the space where the baby tooth once was, so its replacement can erupt without obstruction. To some, the final product looks like an old Radio Flyer® snow sled, or a shoe horn you might use to maintain the shape of unworn shoes. <br />
<h3 class="null" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102) !important; display: block; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 18px; font-style: normal; font-weight: bold; letter-spacing: -0.5px; line-height: 125%; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<br /> Does My Child Need One?</h3>
<br /> It's important to note that dental space maintainers are not required for all childhood tooth loss, and that we’re not going to suggest you create a decade worth of space maintainers as each tooth falls out of your child's mouth. Our bodies are quite effective at saving space for the loss of our front teeth as well as our incisors - it's the teeth along the sides of our mouths that tend to cause the majority of complications. Of course, each mouth is different, so be sure to discuss with us the best course of action for you and your child. If your child has recently lost a tooth, or several teeth, and it’ll be awhile before they’re scheduled to see<span style="color: black;"> Dr. Rader, give us a call at (208) 664-9225</span><span style="color: red;"> </span>to see if you should come in a little earlier.<br /><br /> Using a space maintainer is an affordable and effective way to ensure your child's teeth come in where they are supposed to, and when they're ready. It can have a positive effect on your wallet, reduce the amount of time your child needs to wear braces, and control the cosmetic appearance of your child's teeth and mouth. <br />

There's good reason for this trend – greater and greater amounts of evidence continue to merge that suggest our internal microbiome influences everything from our metabolism to our moods. Recently, a new beneficial strain of oral bacteria has been isolated by researchers at the University of Florida. This strain is of particular interest because it promotes a basic pH and seems to inhibit growth of S. mutans, the major culprit implicated in caries formation.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 20.799999237060547px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">The strain, currently referred to as A12, is found more commonly in the mouths of people with few or no cavities. The bacteria creates ammonia from two common compounds in the mouth: urea (secreted naturally by the host) and arginine (an amino acid). This property is of interest to scientists and health professionals since it directly opposes the action of S. mutans, which ferments sugar into lactic acid, eroding the teeth. However, A12 goes further than just neutralizing acid in the oral environment – research indicates the bacteria can actually kill S. mutans.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 20.799999237060547px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Strain A12 competes vigorously against S. mutans by secreting peroxide bursts and interfering with the processes that allow it to form biofilms. The researchers found that when strain A12 was grown with S. mutans, the latter was unable to form effective plaque structures and did not grow as rapidly as usual.</span></p><p style="margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: 20.799999237060547px;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">This discovery holds both diagnostic and treatment potential. First, measuring the levels of A12 in a patient's mouth compared to other bacterial species could tell dentists about the greater state of the patient's oral health. This could be used to prevent caries and gingivitis before they begin. Second, a suspension of the microbes in saline could be used as a probiotic rinse, inoculating the patient with beneficial bacteria, which along with improved oral hygiene could rapidly change the oral health of a patient in need of improvement. Waterpipes: Why Using a Hookah Is Like Smoking 100 Cigarettes</h1>

Whether you call it a hookah, hubble-bubble, shisha or goza, a waterpipe by any name is hazardous to your health. Research published in the October 2015 issue of the <a href="http://jada.ada.org/article/S0002-8177(15)00491-2/abstract" target="_blank"><em>Journal of the American Dental Association</em></a><em></em> finds that waterpipe smoking is associated with <a href="http://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/g/gum-disease">gum disease</a>, <a href="http://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/o/oral-cancer">oral cancer,</a> esophageal cancer and dry sockets, among other serious health conditions like lung cancer and heart disease.<br /><br /> These findings may come as a surprise to the 2.3 million Americans who smoke waterpipes. “The public needs to know they are putting themselves at risk,” says study author Dr. Teja Munshi. “They should be made aware of the dangers of smoking hookahs.”<br /><br />Waterpipe smoking, which began 400 years ago in ancient India, is often done in groups and on the rise among young people thanks to the popularity of hookah cafes. Up to 34% of 13-15-year-olds have tried it, and up to 20% of college students have also smoked a waterpipe. <br /><br /> A waterpipe heats up special tobacco, often available in flavors such as strawberry, cotton candy and spiced chai. That smoke makes its way through a pot of water in the pipe and is inhaled through a rubber hose with a mouthpiece. The level of nicotine in this tobacco is not currently regulated, and there are no age restrictions on who can frequent hookah cafes or buy related paraphernalia.<br /><br /> Because one waterpipe session can last up to 80 minutes, a smoker could take between 50-200 puffs, compared to cigarettes, which usually take 5-7 minutes to smoke and can be finished in 40-75 puffs. In fact, the World Health Organization reports that one waterpipe session is the same as smoking 100 cigarettes. “Whether you are smoking a cigarette, a cigar, or tobacco from a waterpipe, smoking is dangerous not only to your oral health but to your overall health,” says JADA Editor Michael J. Glick, D.M.D.<br />

Let's take a look at some of those reasons, and learn some tips that'll help you be the one with the freshest breath in the room.</span></div>

Halitosis can also be caused by certain foods you consume (like garlic and onions), acid reflux, post-nasal drip, sinusitis and tonsoliths. More seriously, however, illnesses such as cancer and diabetes can present themselves in this way, so it's important to visit a dentist if your breath issues are prolonged.</span></div>

From serving his country between 2000-2005, to owning his own dental practice in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho ten years later, Justin Rader, DDS fully understands the importance of dental support for military veterans. Dr. Rader shares with OsteoReady how he's been able to provide dental treatment to veterans without access to care. <br />
<strong>OsteoReady: What made you choose dentistry as a career choice?</strong><br />
<strong>Dr. Rader:</strong> When I got out of the Army, I decided to change paths professionally. My stepdad, Dr. Jack Fullwiler, is my mentor and a dentist. I was able to shadow him and could see firsthand the service dentistry provides to its patients. It's family oriented as well as a good, stable career. Full-time Army life was not conducive to a budding family life.<br />
I bought my stepdad's practice in 2015, he had purchased it in 1951 from his father, Dr. Richard Fullwiler, so we've got three generations of history. Hence, I changed the practice name to Generations Dentistry. My great-grandfather, Dr Butler, was also a dentist and he served in World War I. Dr. Fullwiler served in World War II and I served in the Iraq War. I guess you could say serving my country and dentistry runs strong in my family.<br />
<strong>O: How did you get involved in volunteering for veterans?</strong><br />
<strong>Dr. R:</strong> In 2005, I was deployed to Baghdad as a soldier, not a dentist. When I got out, I switched gears. I graduated dental school in 2010, during my postgraduate training I was able to learn about the opportunities to give back to veterans and I knew it was something I had to be involved in.<br />
<strong>O: What kind of volunteer work are you involved in?</strong><br />
<strong>Dr. R:</strong> My main volunteer work is providing dental treatment and raising funds for the <a href="http://rathdrumchamberofcommerce.com/north-idaho-veterans-standdown">StandDowns</a> around Idaho. A StandDown is an annual event that provides all kinds of services for disadvantaged and homeless veterans. The whole community gets involved. Free clothing, toothbrushes and medical screenings are available. Community volunteers provide services, such as free haircuts and a hot meal. There's assistance for those that want it, whether it's finding housing, a job or support with substance abuse. The goal is to create a foundation to help these veterans who have done our country a great service. As an Army veteran myself, I feel a personal duty to serve these men and women in need of dental care.<br />
<strong>O: What kind of services do you offer to veterans?</strong><br />
<strong>Dr. R:</strong> I provide all forms of modern dentistry at the StandDowns and within my practice. Whatever I'm not able to treat, I'll usually give veterans a referral voucher for a practice where they'll be taken care of. I also work with establishments that help raise funds for referral vouchers and material reimbursements to dentists for their services.<br />
<strong>O: What has been your most memorable case?</strong><br />
<strong>Dr. R:</strong> There was one veteran who came into the practice. He had a lot of dental pain—thinking that was normal. I corrected the issue and as he felt that relief, he realized just how bad it had become. He had spent years believing the pain was a routine part of his life. His entire attitude changed because he was no longer suffering. He later returned and explained how happy his family was—that his kids stated he wasn't a "mean dad" anymore. The pain had become so distracting it had literarily changed his whole personality. It was such an honor to provide this vital needed care to veterans.<br />
<strong>O: What advice do you have for practitioners looking to become involved in this service?</strong><br />
<strong>Dr. R:</strong> Check out the upcoming StandDowns through the <a href="http://www.va.gov/health/services/dental/">Veteran Health Administration</a>. The VA StandDowns have grown so big that other organizations are stepping in to give support. It's amazing to be a part of it, coming together to help these veterans that need this support.<br />
The most common procedure needed is extractions. In a regular day there can be 20-40 screenings and for about about 20 veterans, 20-30 teeth get pulled. Clinicians can write prescriptions for veterans too. Licensed volunteers can also give veterans information for where they can find a dental home and hygiene information; these men and women have fought for our freedom and it's so rewarding to help from one veteran to another. <br />
<strong>O: </strong>If you're interested in providing care for veterans, check out the <a href="http://www.va.gov/directory/guide/home.asp?isflash=1">U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs</a> for an association near you.<br />

Well, not actually “longer,” per se, but more visible. The reason is because as we get older, and thus “wiser,” our gums tend to recede along with our increasing age. What “long in the tooth,” really means, then, is that we haven't taken care of our teeth throughout life – hardly wise. Regardless, there is a solution that can help protect your teeth moving forward so you don't fall victim of the other tale about growing older – that of depositing your teeth in a glass jar each night.</span><br />

General Dental Care Rationale Part 1 of 4: <br />
</span><br /></b><span style="font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Arial; font-size: medium;">There are several concepts and techniques that I find myself repeating to patients as they come to the office. This is information on how to take care of teeth at home on a daily basis that is not all common knowledge. Brush 2 times a day (after breakfast and after dinner). Floss 1 time a day (bacteria take about 12 to 24 hours to build up enough of a colony to start damaging teeth with their acid by-product). The house for the bacteria is plaque. Plaque gets on your teeth after one snack or meal and has a consistency of wet bread. It takes the same forces to remove it as you would remove wet bread off the counter top. If it is not removed on a regular basis, then it becomes mineralized and is a cement-like plaque that needs picked off. Use mouth rinses and/or water picks as an adjunct to these basic procedures. It is important to brush for a total of 2 minutes with 30 seconds per quadrant of the mouth. Brush in small circles with a 45 degree angle to get the bristle tips into the small pockets around the teeth. Use a soft bristle toothbrush and it is good to get all sides of the teeth evenly without being too aggressive to cause damage to the gums or teeth. We can induce trauma to our gums and teeth with aggressive brushing and bristles on the toothbrush being too hard. While flossing, wrap the floss <br />
<br />
around the tooth as moving up and down a few times, then wrap the floss around the other tooth in the contact and do the same thing. It is important to not damage the gums, but you will go below the gum levels into pockets around the teeth a little. Some people with larger openings between their teeth may need to use small proxy brushes that look like small tree tops that fit in between the teeth to aid in debris removal that floss is too thin to reach. </span><br /></span>Justin Rader, DDS<br />

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Much
of dentistry that people know about these days is reactionary. For example, a
person feels pain or a chipped tooth and they go to the dentist to find out
that they will need a filling or root canal with a crown. Waiting this long has
put this tooth or teeth in jeopardy situation to save it instead of a routine
cleaning or filling. It could have been prevented or significantly reduced with
knowledge about brushing frequency, technique, flossing, chemical attack with
rinses/toothpastes, and time in a person's life with the external environment
playing a large role. Daily oral care basics are needed, but people do have to
change or add to their daily regiment on an individual basis. For instance, a
person’s diet generally changes every five to seven years, this will modify
care for your dentition, oral bone and gum health. Especially for those with
health conditions that affect your immune system, glands, blood, saliva flow,
gastro-intestinal tract, vitamin absorption, acid reflux, or sleep disorders.
Diabetes is one of these conditions that have multiple affects on your body but
also on your mouth. Many medications to manage the condition, disease, or
side-effects of medications cause xerostomia. Xerostomia is dry mouth and
people get this at different levels from not only medications but from our
foods and drinks we consume. A considerable amount of a these factors are different
per person and can change over the span of a person’s life. Incorporating the
routine that a person needs to do for their own health is vital to
prevent an infected tooth or gums. Who wants an infection in their
mouth? Many don't realize that cavities are caused by bacteria that
accumulate to levels that attack tooth structure and bone level. Those with
health concerns are more at risk to dental problems, so daily care is more
important. Just imagine if that bacterium is strong enough to attack the hardest
surface in your mouth, then what can it do to the rest of your body. There is
research to show there is a link between the bacteria in the mouth to the
bacteria on the heart. So one can see that it is important to know this and it
may motivate them to find out their oral environment status to ensure
prevention is on track instead of fixing it after it breaks or hurts.</span></div>
